Newton North Boy's Advance
Tevin Falzone Is Back After Injury Kept Him Sidelined
The MA & NH High School Report visited Newton North High School last night to watch the Tigers and North Attleboro in the first round of the Division 1 South tournament.
After getting knocked out of the tournament by North Attleboro in 1995, 1996, and 2000, Newton North had to wait more than a decade for a chance to exact some revenge on the Red Rockets. That chance came last night as Newton North hosted North Attleboro in a first round tournament game.
The Tigers did not disapoint, clawing out a 61-50 win before a packed gymnasium at Newton North High School. North Attleboro competed hard, but it wasn't their best shooting night as the Tigers held the Red Rockets to 1-13 shooting from beyond the three point arc. The Tigers were led by junior guard Luke Westman's 18 points and 8 rebounds, senior forward Tevin Falzon's 14 points and 8 rebounds, and senior guard Avi Adler-Cohen's 13 points.
Newton North will play in the second round on Saturday as they travel to face highly touted sophomore Jared Terrell and a Weymouth squad which has become Newton North's arch rival in recent years. The Tigers have knocked Weymouth out of the tournament two of the last three years. This year, the two Bay State Conference foes split their two regular season games with each team winning close contests at home. In those games, Newton North did not have senior forward Tevin Falzon who was sidelined with a broken wrist for the first 15 games of the season. Take your pick, Weymouth at home or Newton North with a healthy Tevin Falzon.

Katelyn Metzger Scores 1,000th Point In Tournament Win
Katelyn Metzger scored her 1,000 point
Monson High School's Katelyn Metzger scores her 1,000th career point Tuesday night in a 67-14 win over Westfield Voke in the first round of the Western Mass Division III State tournmanet. Metzger, needing just 3 points to reach 1,000, scored two baskets half way through the first quarter. In her milestone making basket, Metzger caught the pass, dribbled once and laid it up for her 1,000 and 1,001 career points. Metzger joins an elite club as just the third Mustang to reach the 1,000 point milestone.
Metzger and the Mustangs will host No. 6 Smith Academy Friday night at 7:00 p.m.

All Sean McClung In Bishop Guertin Victory
Sean McClung Had 26 First Half Points
The MA & NH High School Basketball Report was in New Hampshire last night to catch the Bishop Guertin/Merrimack game. The game featured many of the top players in New Hamphsire including BG seniors Sean McClung and Connor Green, Merrimack sophomore Dimitri Floras, as well as Merrimack freshman Eric Gendron. All four players are cream of the crop in New Hampshire high school basketball.
But this night was all about senior Sean McClung who dominated the game from the start. With Babson College present to see McClung perform, the 6'4" small forward did not disappoint. He played with high energy and intensity and with the purpose of winning. He was impressive and as good as we've seen him. McClung was on fire as he knocked down 6 of 7 three pointers in the first half, had two slashes from the wing for finishes, added one offensive put back and two free throws for a 26 point first half that propelled BG to a 44-24 lead over Merrimack at the break. He only played a bit of the third quarter and none of the fourth as this game was well in hand as BG opened up a 66-33 lead after three quarters before cruising to a 91-49 victory.

Mickel Simpson to Trinity College
A week after Woburn Senior Mickel Simpson scored his 1,000th point of his high school career, the 6'4" point guard has committed to play basketball for Trinity College in Hartford, CT.
Trinity plays in the the NESCAC (New England Small College Athletic Conference), which is one of the best Division III conferences in the country for both academics and basketball.
Simpson, our # 27 ranked senior in Massachusetts, has great size and athleticism. During this past AAU season with the Rivals Basketball Club, we saw Simpson take the ball down the lane for an impressive dunk, and then a couple of minutes later, he stuck a pretty looking long range three. Simpson had an excellent senior campaign for Woburn high school as well showing that there is no doubt that his offensive capability is superb and that his length and athleticism will make him a great on the ball defender at the next level.
Milford's Mike O'Loughlin, who is our #4 ranked senior in the NH Class of 2011 along with fellow Granite State Jayhawks AAU teammate Steve Spirou (Pelham) , who is our #6 ranked NH senior, have also committed to attend Trinity next Spring.
The addition of these three athletes gives Coach Cosgrove and Trinity not just a good recruiting class, but a great one. All three of these young men were potential division 2 scholarhip athletes.
