Nicole Boudreau Comes Up Big For Andover Girls
Nicole Boudreau Wins Again
Junior Nicole Boudreau has been stepping up huge in big games her whole entire life. Boudreau played in another big game this week and put on another big performance. Our #1 ranked junior and Boston College bound Boudreau led Andover (our #1 ranked MA team) to a 66-41 victory over Pinkerton, NH (our #3 ranked NH team) in the championship game of the Greater Lawrence Christmas Tourney. She was named the tournament MVP for the second straight year. Her statistics likely would have been better in the final game but she played just 26 minutes and sat out most of the fourth quarter because her team was ahead by so many points. She finished with a game-high 25 points to go along with six rebounds, three assists, four steals and one blocked shot. She was 5 of 10 from the 3-point line and 2 for 2 from the foul line. This is nothing knew for Boudreau as during the Christmas tourney title game last year she scored 39 points on 9-of-12 shooting from 3-point range. Marist bound Natalie Gomez-Martinez added 12 points for Andover in the blow out.

Masconomet's Brooke Stewart was subjected to a hard foul in Wednesday's marquee basketball matchup against bitter rival Pentucket. Stewart, who was in the middle of a 24-point, 7-rebound, 5-assist game at the time, was shoved into a wall that had fairly thick padding, so she wasn't injured. Inwardly, Stewart might have been seething, but she didn't manifest that anger. She calmly went to the foul line for a pair of shots and Masco also retained possession due to the deliberate foul. By now, Stewart, a 16-year-old junior who's been starting since midway through her freshman season, is starting to understand the nuances of the game.
She's elevated her game to a new level of excellence this season, averaging 27 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists (the team leader in all those categories) while displaying the versatility of a 6-footer who can play all five positions. That's the kind of performance that will get the opposing team's attention, and they'll try to mess with Stewart's head by getting extra physical with her.
Stewart realizes that she can't let it affect her demeanor or her play. She wants to be on the floor at all times — she needs to be there for her team, not just herself. "They want to rattle you," Stewart said of opponents in general. "I've kind of learned how to deal with all that just from messing up (in previous years). I didn't even score in last year's game against Pentucket."
Stewart showed considerable raw talent as a freshman two years ago, when she scored 7 points per game. That average zoomed to 14 points per game last season, when she earned Cape Ann League all-league and Salem News All-Star status, but she readily admits that she was still in the middle of the learning curve.
The biggest differences in her game this season are patience, discipline and mental toughness. With Pentucket's defense swarming her in the opening quarter Wednesday night, Stewart concentrated on delivering the ball to her teammates and didn't take a single shot. After the Sachems defense loosened up, Stewart found her scoring rhythm and accounted for 11 points in the second quarter and added 13 more in the second half. That's been her pattern all season. Stewart has averaged better than 8 points in the fourth quarter, when the game is often on the line. "She's one of the best players in the state," Pentucket coach John McNamara said after Stewart wrapped up the Masco Christmas Tournament MVP Award despite the Sachems' 61-60 win in the final. "What makes her so tough? She can drive to the basket or step back and hit the three. She can beat you in a lot of ways."
Stewart says she'll "do anything for a win," and she obviously plays like she means it. She's as much of a whirling dervish as she was earlier in her career, but last year she was always in a hurry to get to double digits, figuring that's what the Chieftains needed to put themselves in a position to win. Now she lets the game come to her, which is what the exceptional players do.
"She's always been a big part of this team," said Danielle Davis, who is a junior captain along with Stewart, "but this is her breakthrough year. She works her butt off. She's in the gym before and after practice, shooting around and doing her dribbling and ballhandling drills. I think that this year, being a captain, she feels this is her gym and it's also our gym. She's not being selfish — she's doing it for the team — but she's also personally strong."
Coach Bob Romeo has seen an explosive type of development in his young player in just two-plus seasons and there seems to be no end in sight. "She's only six games into her junior season and she still has a ceiling to reach," Romeo said of Stewart. "Given how hard she works and how much she wants it, I still don't think she's close to that ceiling. And the thing is, she has the physical tools to match her great desire. I tell her to never be satisfied."
Like any player who aspires to be great, Stewart has been doing her homework in the offseason. One night in the summer of 2009, Scott Hazelton found Stewart playing ball at Gordon College at 11 p.m. Hazelton, a former star at Central Catholic who was recruited by UConn and went on to play at Rhode Island, told Stewart he was going to put a team together and would she be interested in playing for him?
Hazelton's AAU team, based in Plaistow, N.H., was named the New Hampshire Rivals. This past summer, the Rivals traveled to Tennessee, Kentucky, Vermont and Washington, D.C. and Stewart's individual skills blossomed. So did her team assessment skills. "It was everything," said Stewart. "My dribbling and handling skills got much better because Hazelton had us dribbling all the time. I also see the court much better than I used to. The thing is, when you're playing against girls who are better, you have to get them the ball or they get mad. Everything kind of clicked and I've taken that back (to Masco)."
Stewart grew up in a basketball household. She's close to her older sister Caroline, who had a fantastic career at Masco and ended up with a scholarship to Division 1 Boston University, where she is currently a junior captain. Brooke has always had to listen to comparisons to her sister even though they have vastly different styles (Caroline is a classic low post player; Brooke is all over the building) and while she feels honored in many ways, she's also eager to break those chains. It's no secret that Brooke aims to be even better than her older sister. "Caroline always gives me a call when we play," said Brooke. "She tells me about the little things I need to do and I really listen. I mean, why wouldn't I listen to someone who has more experience than I do? Coach Romeo tells me not to compare my skills to Caroline, but it's always going to be there and I do want to be better."
Brooke is already drawing interest from St. Joseph's in Philadelphia, Rutgers and Princeton. She's visited Villanova. It's early in the process and more schools are bound to get involved, especially if she remains on the developmental fast track that Romeo talks about. "St. Joe's is in the Atlantic 10 and that's good, but in my mind, I want to go bigger," said Stewart, who is an honor roll student. "The Big East would be nice."
She realizes that a lot of things could change in the next year. For now, she wants to be the best player she can be for the 4-2 Chieftains, whose only losses have been by a point. "We're competitive," said Stewart, "and we want to get better. Last year we lost to Andover in the second round (of the Division 1 North Tournament). We should do well this season and if we get some home games (in the state tourney), it would be even better."

A Battle and A War in Nashoba Valley
Last evening, the Mass & NH High School Basketball Report traveled to the Nashoba Tech Holiday Tournament to see the Finals Matchup between King Phillip and Manchester Essex. King Phillips has our #1 rated junior in 6'8" Jake Layman (left) and Manchester has our #4 ranked senior in Joe Mussachia (right). The individual battle went to Mussachia (41 points, 18 rebounds, 10 assists), but more importantly, the war was won by Jake Layman (22 points, 13 rebounds, 8 blocks) and King Phillip 75 to 68.
The game started out all King Phillip as they jumped out to a 14 to 2 lead, with Layman scoring 10 1st quarter points, but Manchester battled back to make it a 7 point game after 1 quarter (16 to 9). The second quarter was back and forth as Manchester’s full court pressure bothered King Phillip, and kept the game close, but struggles from the foul line haunted Manchester all night long as they missed a total of 21 on the evening.
The second half was a physical battle that saw Manchester cut the lead to 3 with 5:45 to play, but Layman made a huge 3 and then ran the length of the floor to block an uncontested layup, that was followed up by a reverse layup in transition by the Big Fella, putting King Phillip up 8 with 4:04 left. Manchester cut it to 4 again, but Layman was solid from the Free Throw stripe and sealed the deal for King Phillip.
Jake Layman is a 6’8" guard, with skills way beyond his age. When we saw Laymen play this Summer we said that he has a chance to play at a high-major level. Now, we know for sure that this young man will be doing just that come Fall or after a potential post grad year. Laymen is impressive basketball player. He is best in transition and can finish well above the rim. He has a great touch and an explosive dribble drive game, that is finished off with great vertical jump. He also has an excellent stroke from behind the three point arc. Laymen has realized much potential over the last year and there is much more to come. He is a high major scholarship player.
Joe Mussachia is a 6’5 guard that plays the game hard and plays all 5 positions on the floor for Manchester. He did it all for Manchester tonight, his triple-double performance was the single best effort we have seen from a high school player this year. He dominated both ends of the floor. Mussachia's offensive game has continued to improve as the southpaw showed he has good dexterity around the rim. Mussachia's also continues to become a better and better three point shooter. What might be most impressive about Mussachia's is how hard he plays the game. He is a tough nose kid that is not afraid to mix up on the glass. Mussachia will bring his game to Amherst College next year passing up several other division 2 scholarship offers from St. Anselms, Bentley, and Southern New Hampshire. Lucky Amherst.
Other Key Contributors:
6’5" Alec May who chipped in with 14 points for King Phillip. He was very aggressive and took 4 charges in the paint on some of the dribble penetration by Manchester’s guards.
King Phillips 6’7" Connor Layman is still progressing, but he has a big long basketball body and his skill level will only get better.
Manchester guard Jason Stasiak had some impressive drives to the basket and showed the ability to play solid defense for Manchester.
Manchester's 6’4 Sophomore forward Taylor Ketchum played well and looks to be a player we will be talking about for the Hornets in the years to come.

Sophomores AAU Rivals teammates Derek Collins (left) and Sam Dowden (right) both came up big in semi-final victories and will face off in the finals of the Greater Lawrence Christmas Tournament.

Madol Proves Best in New Hampshire
David Madol Leads Manchester Memorial
David Madol showed why he is our #1 ranked player in the New Hampshire Class of 2011 as he dominated play all evening long in the opening round of the Queen City Invitational Basketball Tournament in Manchester, New Hampshire. Madol was a man amongst boy's as the 6'6" forward scored a game-high 28 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked 3 shots to lead Manchester Memorial to a victory of Trinity.
The Mass & NH High School Basketball Report has Manchester Memorial ranked second in division 1 behind Bishop Guertin based on the talent of Madol, as nobody in New Hampshire has close to Madol's ability and we all know great players make great teams. We have said all along that if Madol decides that he going to play full speed ahead every evening, Memorial is the team to beat in division 1. If last night was a sign of things to come, look out for Memorial. Added to that, we have seen Bishop Guertin play twice thus far, and they have not looked like the BG we expected in either game.
Last night, Madol showed why he is so good as he scored the ball in a number of ways including knocking down three, pull-ups, and penetrations and finishes above the crowd. Madol also separates himself from his peers with his athleticism as he is able to play the game above the rim. Madol rebounded the ball above the rim all evening. He also brought down the house down with a thunderous slam dunk in the 1st quarter. Memorial senior guard Dylan Haines got a steal around half court and went to the basket. He laid the ball of the backboard for Madol, who jumped up and while in mid-air caught the ball and threw it down with authority. Madol added another thunderous dunk in the 2nd half.
6'7" Sophomore Mabor Gabriel led Trinity with 14 points.

Steve Haladyna Leads St. John's Prep
Steve Haladyna Led Saint John's Tonight
We visited the BABC Holiday tournament and watched several games. St. John's Prep and New Mission, our number 1 & 4 teams in Massachusetts, were featured in the last game of the evening at Chelsea High School. St. John's prevailed 53-49 in what was a sloppy game. Junior Steve Haladyna, who is known for getting his hands on balls and being in the right place at the right time, did just that tonight on his way to a game high 19 points. Haladyna outworked his opponent and was the most effective player on the court. Notre Dame bound Pat Connaughton did not have his best evening on the offensive end as he netted only three field goals and 8 free throws for 14 points. However, Connaughton came up big on the defensive end with six blocks, three of them being big time blocks.
St. John's took early control as they opened up a 15-8 lead and then led 31-17 at the half. Second half pressure by New Mission caused a multitude of St. John's turnovers that eventually turned this into a competitive game that could of gone either way. New Mission got to within two in the fourth quarter behind 6'5" senior Kachi Nzerem's 16 points. However, Haladyna's play down the stretch and two clutch free throws by Connaughton sealed the victory.
6'8" Sophomore Jacquil Taylor scored a game high 20 points to lead Cambridge to a 67 - 49 victory over Putnam. Taylor used some nifty inside moves and had a nice steal and breakaway dunk. 6'1" senior guard Kyroe Qualls-Betts added 14 of his own including 3 trifectas, and 6'4" senior guard Deondre Startling was impressive as he added 13 points of his own.
Everett's senior forward Erno Deshommes had a big night around the basket scoring 23 points on way to Everett's 61-44 victory over Haverhill. Everett took control early holding Haverhill to 16 points in the first half and led 27-16 at the half as Haverhill was struggling from the floor missing several 3 point attempts.
B.C. High defeated Mount Si, Washington 57-44 behind 5 threes and 15 points from Bowdoin bound Bryan Hurley. Junior 6'4" forward Dan Curtis showed us good touch from the perimeter adding 12 points. B.C. High broke open a 27-27 half time game by holding Mount Si to eight points over the first 11:00 minutes of the second half.
In the opening game of the day, Windsor, CT easily handled Bishop Guertin 81-54. Windsor's consistent pressure in this one was the difference maker as BG looked nervous against the pressure. After going into half time down 8, 39-27, BG started the second half with 3 straight turnovers and found themselves down 42-27. BG would cut it to 10 at 58-48 to end the third, but would never get any closer. Connor Green led BG with 15 points and Sean McClung added 10 points.
