Andover Girls Get Round II Against Central

Nicole Boudreau Came Up With Big Steal Last Night

Last night at Andover High School our #1 and #2 Mass girls teams met for the second time this year, and Andover won the second straight close contest against Central Catholic 53-52 as our #1 rated junior in Nicole Boudreau came up with a steal with 10 seconds left in the game. Our #16 Sophomore Devon Caveney was the hero as she broke a 50-50 tie with a three-pointer with just over a minute to play. Caveney finished with a game high 22 points for Andover. Boudreau finished with 17 points.

For Central Catholic, our #13 ranked senior Melissa Miller who will be attending Merrimack College in the fall led the Raider's with 18 points and 16 rebounds. Our #4 ranked sophomore Casey McLaughlin added 13 points.

Andover trailed 16-8 entering the second quarter but went on a 10-0 run over the first 2:30 to take an 18-16 lead. Caveney netted a 3-pointer from the top of the key and drove for a layup. Meanwhile, Boudreau hit a 3-pointer from way downtown. Central responded and went into the half up four points 26-22. Andover would win the third quarter 19-14 and would take a one point advantage into the fourth. Both teams would score 12 points in the final frame and Andover would walk away with a 1 point win.

Zach Hurynowicz Scores 48 Points in Burlington Victory

Zach Hurynowicz Scored 48 Points Tonight

The Mass & NH High School Basketball Report was there in what might have been the best high school game of the year as Zach Hurynowicz hit a three as the buzzer sounded to give Burlington a 77-76 win over Woburn tonight at Woburn High School. Hurynowicz's performance was likely the best high school performance of the year as he scored 20 of his 48 points in the fourth quarter to lead Burlington to the victory. Hurynowicz hit 8 threes on the evenings and had some incredible finishes around the rim. He was just so good.

With the game tied 68-68 with just over two minutes to play, Woburn senior Mike Sallese hit a three to give the Tanners a 71-68 lead which would get expanded to 73-68 as a result of a technical on the Burlington coach. From there Hurynowicz would take over with two great finishes and a beautiful pass to Freshman Shane Farley who would complete the play to keep Burlington within striking distance. With 12 seconds remaining Hurynowicz went the length of the court for a layup that cut the Woburn lead to one. Sallese was fouled with 4.8 seconds left, making the second of two from the line to extend the Woburn lead to 76-74. Hurynowicz inbounded the ball to Farley who returned the ball to Hurynowicz who pushed the ball up court and hit the buzzer beater.

Woburn led 11-0 in this game and 20-11 after the first quarter behind 6'5" senior Bill Claflin (24 points, 14 rebounds). Burlington would fight back behind Hurynowicz's 17 second quarter points to take the lead at half time 37-36. Woburn would come out strong and score the first seven points of the third quarter to go up 44-37 and would lead 52-47 at the end of three quarters. Woburn senior Mickel Simpson, who was in foul trouble much of the night, hit back-to-back threes in the fourth quarter to open up a 60-55 lead for Woburn. The rest was Hurynowicz who would will Burlington to victory tonight.

Those who impressed tonight:

Zach Hurynowicz (6'2", Senior guard, Burlington) - As always, Hurynowicz played harder than everybody else on the court and was determined to win. Hurynowicz is an excellent athlete that has a superb basketball I.Q. He plays at both ends of the floor and plays superb on the ball defense and rebounds extremely well at the defensive end. He has a much improved jump shot as the stroke looks sweet coming off his hand. Simply put, this young man is a winner.

Bill Claflin (6'5", Senior forward, Woburn) - Claflin showed that he has good footwork and excellent touch around the basket as he scored using both hands and from a variety of different angles. Claflin also competed extremely hard on the glass as he dominated the paint on both ends of the floor. He is much improved from last year.

Mikel Simpson (6'4", Senior guard, Woburn) - Simpson looks the part as he is an athletic and long guard that can get up and down the floor and shoot the basketball from extended range. At 6'4" tall, he looks impressive at the point guard position. He showed us an excellent pull-up in the lane and a couple of threes that had perfect rotation.

Shane Farley (6'2", Freshman guard, Burlington) - Farley showed us that he is a player of the future as he is an athletic guard with skill. On his first offensive opportunity of the evening, the Freshman had an excellent crossover to a sweet looking pull-up that was all net. He also showed us a quick first step as he beat his defender off the dribble before finding an open teammate. Maybe the most impressive thing about Farley is the fact that he has the mindset of an upperclassman and not a Freshman. He's clearly not afraid to put it up. The future is bright for this young man.

Christian Morneweck (6'4', Freshman wing, Burlington) - Morneweck is an excellent athlete who is long and can run the the floor. He has a great basketball body. Morneweck has an excellent upside and could be a real special basketball player in the years to come.

Haverhill-Lawrence Wrap-up

Vonleh Keeps Turning Heads

The Mass & NH High School Basketball Report visited the Haverhill-Lawrence game last night and below are those that impressed.

Noah Vonleh (6’7”, jr., Haverhill) - Vonleh is the best basketball prospect we have seen in a high school basketball uniform in the last 25 years of covering High School basketball. Vonleh is likely the most improved basketball player in New England. Vonleh is all of 6’7” and has grown a couple of inches since the beginning of the summer. Added to that, his body is starting to fill in, and his athleticism and skill level are off the charts. At 6’7”, his ability to handle the basketball like a guard makes him a huge threat whenever he has the basketball in his hands. Vonleh has also shown a better understanding of the game as some of the passes he has made this young season demonstrate his growth as a basketball player. Vonleh’s perimeter shooting has improved significantly, but it is still an area that needs more improvement.

Jaylan Alicia (5’10”, sr., Lawrence) - Alicia is an athletic guard that showed that he can score the basketball in a number of ways. He has a nice stroke from behind the arc, is impressive with the pull-up off the dribble, and showed us a nice floater over the big man. The bottom line is that he can score the basketball. Alicia is a hidden gem that has not gotten enough exposure since he did not play on the AAU circuit.

Jesse Hiraldo (6’5”, sr., Lawrence) - Hiraldo has nice touch and can finish effectively and efficiently around the basket. He showed some nice up and under moves around the basket and had a couple of nice follow-ups.

Parker Rogers (5’11”, jr., Haverhill) - Rogers is an explosive southpaw guard that has multiple gears. He is extremely athletic and can get to the rim. Rogers has made significant improvements since last year and will be one talented high school basketball player during his senior campaign.

Noah Vonleh - Haverhill Take Down Lawrence

Noah Vonleh Does It All For Haverhill

The Mass & NH High School Basketball Report was as Haverhill High School last night to see Noah Vonleh and Haverhill upset of our #6 ranked team in Massachusetts in Lawrence. The Hillies prevailed 54-51 in this back-and-forth contest. Vonleh was spectacular on the evening as he did a lot of everything to lead Haverhill to victory. In the end, Vonleh's numbers were through the roof with 23 points, 17 rebounds, 8 blocks, and 6 assists. Haverhill broke on top early gaining a 16-6 advantage after one quarter. Vonleh got his second foul three minutes into the second quarter and sat the remainder of the half.

By the time Vonleh returned to start the third quarter, the game was tied 21-21. Lawrence continued the momentum they ended the half with as they took an eight point third quarter lead. They would battle the rest of the night with Lawrence holding a slim lead. Down 51-45 inside of two minutes, Vonleh found Parker Rogers (8 points, 11 board) for a three that cut the Lawrence lead to 3. Vonleh would them block a shot on the defensive end, and lead the charge up court. Vonleh then proceeded to give his defender a through the legs dribble before a pull-up three of his own to knot it at 51-51 with 50 seconds left. On the very next possession, Vonleh attacked the lane and kicked to junior Edwin Valentin. Valentin's righty across-the-lane runner caromed home with 15 seconds left.

Lawrence had two chances to tie with the ball in talented guard Jaylen Alicea's hands. At the buzzer, a long Alicea fall-away missed, and Vonleh and Haverhill had beaten a talanted Lawrence team.

Congrats to Samantha on a job well done.

Katie Cullerot Scores 1,000 Point

Katie Cullerot Celebrates 1,000 Point
(Picture couresy of the Concord Monitor)

Katie Cullerot, our #6 senior in New Hampshire scored her 1,000 points last night in John Stark's High School 58-23 victory over Pembroke. Cullerot needed just over five minutes to become the third John Stark girls' basketball player to reach 1,000 points.

Cullerot, who will be taking her talents to Assumption College on scholarship, is an excellent shooter who has no problem knocking down shots beyond the arc. Cullerot plays the game hard and with a purpose and has a very high basketball IQ.

Cullerot ended the suspense early. She got the Generals' first points of the game when she took the ball at the corner, drove around the defender along the baseline and was fouled on the layup. Her two free throws put her within one shot of the mark. Still in the first quarter, Cullerot again drove along the baseline and attacked under the basket. This time, the shot fell, drawing a large roar from the crowd and forcing an in-game ceremony. "I didn't want to have to worry about it," Culllerot said. "I knew a lot of people were amped up about it. It was nice to get it over with and play the game. I wasn't even thinking about it when I was making that move. I just went for it, it went in, and everyone was cheering. It was really nice."

Demitri Monovoukas - Lexington Tame Reading

Demitri Monovoukas Had His Way Against Reading

The Mass & NH High School Basketball Report was on hand to watch 6'5" Senior forward Demitri Monovoukas drop 30 points on Reading on way to Lexington's 61 - 57 win at Reading Memorial High School. Monovoukas was the story in this one as he scored in every way possible including a dunk in transition, a baseline drive, offensive putbacks, a follow-up tip, as well as an impressive up-and-under. Most importantly, Monovoukas knocked down back-to-back threes in the fourth quarter to keep Reading at bay. Monovoukas also knocked down two big free throws in the last minute to put Lexington up for good.

Reading led 29-24 at the half behind 12 first half points from senior guard Trey Jones. Jones played the game a couple of gears faster than his opponents and found himself in the lane at will. Jones had some great passes tonight as he found teammate Jerry-Ellis Williams for some easy finishes around the basket.

Lexington would take its first lead of the night at 35-34 midway through the third quarter. Lexington's junior guard Chris O'Keefe would have 5 straight points to propel Lexington. Lexington would head into the fourth up 41-38. Lexington's Monovoukas (13 fourth quarter points) and Reading's junior guard Kenny Reed (9 fourth quarter points) would battle back and forth for the next eight minutes. Monovoukas broke a 57-57 tie with under a minute to play. Lexington would add two more free throws to close out the scoring.

Those who Impressed:

Demitri Monovoukas (6'5" sr. forward, Lexington) - Monovoukas showed that he can score the basketball in a variety of ways including stroking the three. He is active around the basket and has a nice touch. Monovoukas also showed that he can run the floor and finish in transition. Monovoukas was excellent tonight and a pleasure. He will benefit from his body filling in as he will be able to play more physical. He appears to be a late bloomer and will likely improve significantly as he continues to develop his skill set.

Trey Jones (5'10" sr. guard, Reading) - Jones had flashes of brilliance tonight as he showed us blazing speed as he left his defender in the dust on several occasions. He also had some great passes tonight and two sweet up-and-under finishes. Jones also got himself in some bad situations tonight and took some ill-advised shots and made some ill-advised passes. Jones is a talented guard and would be a nightmare if he played full-speed ahead the entire evening.

Chris Lee (6'5", jr. forward, Lexington) - Lee had 5 early points on this one on some physical play around the basket and a good looking pull-up. Lee has a great athletic body as he is strong and physical. Lee would benefit from some skill development both in the shooting and ball handling areas.

Jerry Ellis-Williams (6'5", jr. forward, Reading) - Ellis-Williams had some moments tonight as he had some nice finishes around the basket and some impressive rebounds. Ellis-Williams also showed he is able to step away and make shots. Ellis-Williams needs to play more physical, especially around the basket.

Kenny Reed (5'10", jr. guard, Reading) - Reed had a great fourth quarter as he scored on some nice finishes around the basket. On three different occasion, Reed also rebounded above the crowd in traffic. During these moments, he was fun to watch. Like his teammate Jones, Reed needs to play with intensity the entire evening.

Chris O'Keefe (6'2", jr. guard, Lexington) - O'Keefe had 5 straight points in the third quarter off a drive and a three to propel Lexington into the lead. O'Keefe had a great body and is effective when he uses it. O'Keefe skill set needs continued work if he wants to develop into an effective guard.

Drew Belcher (6'4", fr. forward, Reading) - Belcher has a great athletic body and used it to battle inside. He has great upside and his best days are ahead.

NH Boys Updated Team Rankings

Jamie Holder and Milford Still On Top

The New Year has come and gone in New Hampshire, and there hasn't been much change in our boys rankings. Jamie Holder and Mike O'Loughlin have established Milford as the best team in New Hamsphire. Bishop Guertin, Manchester Central, Manchester Memorial, Trinity, and Merrimack will all fight for the Division 1 Crown. Bishop Guertin remains the early favorite, but the gap has sure closed. Milford could possibly be challenged in Division 2 by Souhegan, who jumped into the rankings based on an impressive performance by Devin Gilligan in the Chesire Tire Holiday Tournament.

New Hampshire Boys Team Rankings

RankPreseasonJan 1 (Latest Rankings)
1MilfordMilford (4-0)They won the Cheshire Tire Holiday Festival. Seniors Jamie Holder and Mike O'Loughlin are two of the best talents in NH. This team is the best team in the State and should easily capture Division 2 State Championship.
2Bishop Guertin

Bishop Guertin (3-1)

BG hasn't played its best basketball yet, but they do have a win over Manchester Central. They have much dept in seniors Connor Green, Sean McClung, and juniors Logan Kesty and Brad Holler.

3Manchester Memorial

Manchester Central (4-1)

They lost to BG at BG in a game they could of and should of won. In the Queen City Christmas Tournament, they beat Manchester Memorial by a point and then won the tournament. John Wickey, who was the MVP of the tournament, is playing excellent basketball and has great support from junior Gabe LaCount.
4Manchester CentralManchester Memorial (3-1)The addition of David Madol makes this team an instint contender. Expect Central to be a huge factor come tournament time.
5MerrimackMerrimack (4-1)They made it to the finals of the Queen City Basketball Tournament without Dimitri Floras who was away for grandmother's funeral. Junior Tyler Gendron and Freshman Eric Gendron have been superb. We love Floras and thus Merrimack could sneak up and win division 1.
6TrinityTrinity (4-1)Lost to Manchester Memorial in the Queen City Christmas Tournament. However, Trinity has great size, and could create problems.
7PelhamPelham (3-1)Pelham took their 3-0 record to the Lowell Holiday Tournament where they lost 73-45 to Acton Boxborough in semi-final action. Pelham can win because Steve Spirou plays as hard as anybody in the State.
8DoverSouhegan (4-1)Souhegan and Devin Gilligan gave Milford all they could handle in the Chesire Tire Holiday Tournament. Gilligan can score the basketball and thus Souhegan may have the only chance to knock off Milford.
9BedfordSalem (3-2)2-0 early before heading into a loaded field in the Greater Lawrence Christmas Tournament where they were 1-2.
10Nashua NorthNashua North (2-2)Talented juniors Javon Williams and Ryan Gauthier should be able to make this team a contender.

Danielle Walczak Scores 30 In Win

Danielle Walczak is our #1 ranked NH Senior

Last night the Mass & NH High School Basketball Report was on hand to watch Portsmouth High School take on Oyster River. The game featured our #1 ranked Senior Danielle Walczak and our #2 ranked Sophomore Kelsey Brown. Walczak, a 6-foot-1 center who has accepted a full basketball scholarship from the University of Maine, scored a game high 30 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in route to a 47-42 victory over Portsmouth.

In a good contest, Portsmouth was within two points after a Christina Jones basket with 4:10 to play, but the Clippers didn't score another basket for the remainder of the game. Nonetheless, Portsmouth still trailed by two and had a chance to tie the contest with 1:18 to play, but Susie French missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity. Oyster River squandered its opportunity to put the game away as well. The Bobcats were held to five points in the final quarter, and sophomore Kelsey Brown scored three of those five points from the free throw line in the final 14 seconds. Brown wound up with nine points on the evening. Walczak collected Oyster River's only field goal in the last quarter.

Portsmouth held its only lead after a Faith Jenkins basket made it a 21-19 game with 3:37 left in the second quarter, but the Clippers didn't score again in the first half. Oyster River closed the quarter with a 9-0 run that gave the Bobcats a 28-21 halftime lead. Oyster River took its largest lead, 42-32, when Isabel Gorham scored late in the third quarter. The Bobcats led 42-34 entering the final eight minutes.

Senior Portsmouth guard Susie French was a bright spot as she fought hard all game giving her team a chance to win. She finished with a team high 18 points.

The victory raised Oyster River's record to 4-0. The Bobcats have also beaten Coe-Brown (54-41), Bedford (42-38) and St. Thomas (52-30).

Mike O'Loughlin Has Had A Great Career

Mike O'Louglin Scored his 1,000 point

Milford, NH senior guard Mike O'Loughlin scored his 1,000th point at the Cheshire Tire Holiday Festival. O'Loughlin, who is our #4 ranked NH senior, scored his 1,000 point on Milford's way to capturing the Holiday Festival in Keene, NH. In the opening round of play, O’Loughlin hit five 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 31 points to lead the Spartans to an opening round win over Smithfield (RI).

O'Loughlin has had an exceptional career for the Spartans and scored 23 points in the NH Class I finals as Milford captured the Championship last winter. O'Loughlin is an athletic guard that does a little bit of everything. O'Loughlin can get up and down the floor, score and transition, and make shots. He's a winner. Congrats.

Updated Mass Girls 2013 Player Rankings

Olivia Healy is #1 in Class of 2013

The New Year has come and gone. We have seen a lot of basketball in December and will be updating our rankings accordingly. The following is the updated rankings for the Mass Girls Class of 2013.

1. Olivia Healy (5’10”, Reading High School) – Healy is a tough combo forward who can play inside and out. She plays the game with great intensity. Healy has the ability to score in traffic off the dribble and can knock down the open three. Her versatility and toughness make her a tough matchup for most forwards her age.

2. Ashley Lutz (6’1”, Lincoln Sudbury High School) - Lutz is a multi purpose player. We got a chance to see Lutz a few times over the past year and she is better each time we see her. Lutz has a great shooting touch from the outside and also has the ability to put the ball on the floor. Plays the game with great intensity. Lutz is very physical and already has a college frame which helps her battle on the boards. She has great upside.

3. Gracie Miller (6’2”, Wellesley High School) - Miller is a 6’2 center who can do it all. Miller has great touch from 15 feet in. She has very good footwork on the block and she also runs the floor exceptionally well. Miller has a knack for always going to the open spots on the floor freeing her up for easy hoops. She has very long arms making her a good shot blocker and rebounder. Miller possibly has the greatest upside in the class of 2013.

4. Casey McLaughlin (6’0”, Central Catholic High School) – McLaughlin is an extremely athletic forward who loves to attack the basket. McLaughlin has one of the quickest first steps for any player in the state. She’s a relentless competitor who is also looking to make plays. Very good rebounder and finisher around the basket.

5. Ara Talkov (5’11”, Swampscott High School) – Talkov is a guard who can do it all. She can knock it down from behind the arc, and also beat defenders off the dribble. Talkov is extremely aggressive offensively as she is always searching for ways to score. She is also very good at getting out in transition and finishing at the end of the break.
