Wellesley’s Blake Dietrick commits To PrincetonBlake Dietrick made her decision known recently that she will be playing basketball for the Princeton Tigers. A 1,000-point scorer with a year to play, Dietrick is a two-time Bay State Conference All-Star who averaged 20 points per game last winter and shot 50 percent from behind the 3-point arc. Dietrick averaged 17 ppg in her sophomore year and 8 ppg in her freshman year. As we have said before, Dietrick is a great athlete who can score the basketball in bunches. She also plays the game with a sense of purpose and does so at both ends of the floor.
In lacrosse, she’s a two-time All-American and this past spring she broke the Wellesley single-season scoring mark with 101 goals and 50 assists. Thus, the decision to play basketball over lacrosse was difficult for Dietrick. Although she was recruited by Division 1 programs in both sports, Dietrick realized that playing both wouldn’t work. In the end, Dietrick loved basketball just a little bit more.
It is clear that Dietrick sees the big picture and understands the importance of a Princeton education. The best thing about this phenom is that she is as good in the classroom as she is on the athletic field. Dietrick scored a 2290 on her combined SAT score (out of 2400). That in itself is quite remarkable. "Academics are extremely important for me,’’ Dietrick said. “We visited the school when I was younger and I fell in love. It’s always been my dream school. I’ve always known that it’s a place I’d like to be." On the basketball side, Princeton finished 26-3 and earned an 11th seed in last year’s NCAA tournament, the highest seed ever for an Ivy League school. How about that for the best of both worlds?
Now that Dietrick is putting down the lacrosse stick and concentrating on just basketball, one can imagine how good she is going to get. Her upside is huge.
