Zach Hurynowicz Scores 48 Points in Burlington Victory

Zach Hurynowicz Scored 48 Points Tonight

The Mass & NH High School Basketball Report was there in what might have been the best high school game of the year as Zach Hurynowicz hit a three as the buzzer sounded to give Burlington a 77-76 win over Woburn tonight at Woburn High School. Hurynowicz's performance was likely the best high school performance of the year as he scored 20 of his 48 points in the fourth quarter to lead Burlington to the victory. Hurynowicz hit 8 threes on the evenings and had some incredible finishes around the rim. He was just so good.

With the game tied 68-68 with just over two minutes to play, Woburn senior Mike Sallese hit a three to give the Tanners a 71-68 lead which would get expanded to 73-68 as a result of a technical on the Burlington coach. From there Hurynowicz would take over with two great finishes and a beautiful pass to Freshman Shane Farley who would complete the play to keep Burlington within striking distance. With 12 seconds remaining Hurynowicz went the length of the court for a layup that cut the Woburn lead to one. Sallese was fouled with 4.8 seconds left, making the second of two from the line to extend the Woburn lead to 76-74. Hurynowicz inbounded the ball to Farley who returned the ball to Hurynowicz who pushed the ball up court and hit the buzzer beater.

Woburn led 11-0 in this game and 20-11 after the first quarter behind 6'5" senior Bill Claflin (24 points, 14 rebounds). Burlington would fight back behind Hurynowicz's 17 second quarter points to take the lead at half time 37-36. Woburn would come out strong and score the first seven points of the third quarter to go up 44-37 and would lead 52-47 at the end of three quarters. Woburn senior Mickel Simpson, who was in foul trouble much of the night, hit back-to-back threes in the fourth quarter to open up a 60-55 lead for Woburn. The rest was Hurynowicz who would will Burlington to victory tonight.

Those who impressed tonight:

Zach Hurynowicz (6'2", Senior guard, Burlington) - As always, Hurynowicz played harder than everybody else on the court and was determined to win. Hurynowicz is an excellent athlete that has a superb basketball I.Q. He plays at both ends of the floor and plays superb on the ball defense and rebounds extremely well at the defensive end. He has a much improved jump shot as the stroke looks sweet coming off his hand. Simply put, this young man is a winner.

Bill Claflin (6'5", Senior forward, Woburn) - Claflin showed that he has good footwork and excellent touch around the basket as he scored using both hands and from a variety of different angles. Claflin also competed extremely hard on the glass as he dominated the paint on both ends of the floor. He is much improved from last year.

Mikel Simpson (6'4", Senior guard, Woburn) - Simpson looks the part as he is an athletic and long guard that can get up and down the floor and shoot the basketball from extended range. At 6'4" tall, he looks impressive at the point guard position. He showed us an excellent pull-up in the lane and a couple of threes that had perfect rotation.

Shane Farley (6'2", Freshman guard, Burlington) - Farley showed us that he is a player of the future as he is an athletic guard with skill. On his first offensive opportunity of the evening, the Freshman had an excellent crossover to a sweet looking pull-up that was all net. He also showed us a quick first step as he beat his defender off the dribble before finding an open teammate. Maybe the most impressive thing about Farley is the fact that he has the mindset of an upperclassman and not a Freshman. He's clearly not afraid to put it up. The future is bright for this young man.

Christian Morneweck (6'4', Freshman wing, Burlington) - Morneweck is an excellent athlete who is long and can run the the floor. He has a great basketball body. Morneweck has an excellent upside and could be a real special basketball player in the years to come.
