Madol and Floras Battle It Out in New Hampshire

David Madol Carried Memorial Tonight

In what was one of the best basketball games we've seen all year as Manchester Memorial defeated Merrimack 67-61 tonight in an up and down battle between the two best high school players in the NHIAA, David Madol and Dimitri Floras. Behind 31 points and 14 rebounds by David Madol, Memorial moved to 10-2 on the season. Merrimack moved to 9-3. Madol put on a show for all as he knocked down shot after shot from behind the arc, added a couple of faded away pull-ups, and had two thunderous dunks. One of them was so hard and on top of a Merrimack defender, it was ESPN material. Madol also showed us that he has a great understanding of the game and knows how to distribute the basketball. If you love basketball, this young guy is worth the $3 admissions. He's one of the the top athletes and best prospects to ever play NHIAA basketball.

Not to be outdone, sophomore sensation Dimitri Floras was unconscious as he netted 34 points after scoring no points in the first quarter. Floras knocked down seven threes on the evening, with four of them coming from NBA range. The super sophomore also showed us his sweet looking pull-up on several different occasions as he used his signature head fake (see left) and hesitation move to get in the middle before knocking down the shot. Best of all Floras had some nifty moves around the basket including a rain drop finish over Madol and a left handed finish around the long Madol. This guy can flat out play and he plays to win.

What made this game so special is that both coaches let their teams play. The game was up and down and filled with excitement with one great basketball play after another. In the end the crowd was rooting for both Madol and Floras each time they touched the ball and the outcome was secondary.

To make a long story short, Memorial exploded out of the gate with a 9-0 run and led 14-2 and 16-7 at the end of the first quarter behind 9 David Madol points. Quarter two would be Floras' as he responded with 16 points of his own as Merrimack trailed 38-30 at the half. Floras started the third quarter with seven straight points and Merrimack would take the lead 44-43 with 4:40 to play in the third. Madol would respond with a monster dunk that would give Memorial a lead they would never relinquish.

The Best of the Rest:

Eric Gendron - The 6'2" freshman guard showed that he belongs on the basketball court with the best players in New Hampshire. He showed us that he knows how to compete and has an excellent basketball IQ. He knocked down a big three tonight and had a bounce pass that was just as nice. This youngster has a chance.

Tyler Gendron - The 6'4" junior small forward was efficient tonight as he made several shots from the foul line extended. Gendron has an excellent stroke and is known for being a deadly three point shooter. Gendron has a real soft touch an has the extra bonus in that he is a lefty.

Shomari Morgan - The 6'1" athletic senior guard showed us that he can do a lot of things on the basketball court. Morgan had two looking sweet back to back pull-ups and a great athletic block above the rim.

NH Boys Class of 2014 Updated Winter Rankings

Colin McManus is a top Freshman prospect in New Hampshire

Bedford High School has our two top NH Freshman prospects in 6'6" Roger Larrivee and 6'8" forward Collin McManus. Larrivee spent most of the season injured, but nonetheless, that does not change his #1 position in our rankings. He is the best prospect in the NH Class of 2014. Larrivee is a talented 6'6" wingman who has a good start on a skill set that could make him a special player. He can step away from the basket and make shots and put the ball to the floor. He can can also run the floor and catch and finish. He has size, skill, and touch, and thus has a chance to be the real deal. Time will tell for this young talent. Larrivee, has a great upside. His teammate Collin McManus (pictured left) is a 6'8" forward that works hard and gets after the glass. He, like Larrivee has great upside and his best years are ahead of him.

New Hamphire Boys Class of 2013 Updated Winter Rankings

Dimitri Floras is a Dominating Guard

Dimitri Floras is our top player in the NH class of 2013. Floras is a talented 6'1" guard who has game. Floras is an exceptional point guard who makes those around him better. The Merrimack High School talent is unique in that he can score from the point guard position in a variety of ways including knocking down the three, off the pull-up, and he can finish around the basket off penetration. Floras is also a great competitor who hates to lose. Add that all up, and although only a sophomore, Floras has made his case that he may be the best high school player in New Hampshire. 6'5" Hopkington forward Mike Auger comes in #2. Auger missed this season due to injury. Auger may be the most improved player in NH over the last year as he literally came out of nowhere. The talented forward has a great body, is athletic, and has developed a game away form the basket. 6'7" Mabor Gabriel from Trinity comes in third. Gabriel can run the lanes, catch, and finish around the basket. He also has a real soft touch and can step away all the way to the three point line and makes shots.

A Star is Born In Central Catholic's Casey McLaughlin

Casey McLaughlin Has Hit Her Stride

Central Catholic 6'0" Sophomore Casey McLaughlin has been sensational this winter leading the Raiders to a 15 - 2 record and tied for first place with Andover in the Merrimack Valley Conference. Sunday afternoon, McLaughlin proved how good she is as she netted a team-high 23 points and added 16 rebounds to lead the Raiders to a 61-57 victory over Andover High School. McLaughlin was unstoppable as she attacked the glass on both ends of the floor creating all kinds of trouble for the Andover defense. The result would be that the Warrior's forwards would spend much of the afternoon in foul trouble, eventually winding up on the bench watching. Inevitably, it would be McLaughlin's play at both ends of the floor that would make the difference in this one.

McLaughlin has continued to improve every time we have seen her. She is an extremely athletic forward who loves to attack the basket, enjoys making contact, and has proven she can finish around the basket. She has one of the quickest first steps of any player in the state. McLaughlin is a relentless competitor who just knows how to makes plays. She has a high motor, she is an excellent rebounder.

She has taken her place on the stage as one of the elite of the elite basketball player's in Massachusetts. Furthermore, she is one of the top prospects in New England high school basketball. A Star has been born, and her name is Casey McLaughlin.

Joe Mussachia, Manchester Making Their Claim

Joe Mussachia Has Been A Force

The last two weeks have been sweet for Joe Mussachia and the Manchester Essex Hornets as they have picked off league foes Hamilton-Wenham, North Andover, and this Friday night they added #22 ranked Wilmington to the list. The result is that the Hornet's are 8-1 in league play and comfortably in first place in the Cape Ann Small division and will represent the league in Division IV North Sectionals. North Andover and Wilmington who are battling it out with Masconomet in the Cape Ann Large also only have one loss in league play (both to Manchester) and will be heading to the division II North Sectionals. Hamilton-Wenham will represent Division III.

So how did this team that has less than 200 boys in grades 9 through 12 do it? Much of this is the result of the play of senior small forward Joe Mussachia. A talent like Mussachia comes along once every twenty-five years in a town like Manchester and Coach Duane Sigsbury is taking advantage. Sigsbury allows the 6'5" small forward the freedom to make basketball plays. Sometimes it's in transition, other times it has been by knocking down the three, but when a basket is needed most the Amherst College bound Mussachia knows how to get it done around the basket. In the process, Mr. Mussachia has made a case for himself as Massachusetts's high school player of the year. Mussachia has been of fire this season averaging 24.5 points per game, 18 rebounds per game, as well as 5 assists. In the three big wins against the Cape Ann's brass, Mussachia has averaged over 30 ppg and 22 rebounds per game. Added to that this young man plays hard and with a purpose. Mussachia is a winner.

Friday night was no different as Manchester traveled to Wilmington High School as the underdog again. The Wilmington Wildcats entered the game with a league record of 11-1. We knew this was going to be a high scoring game early as both teams got off to a quick start and at the end of the first quarter the game was tied 21 all. The second quarter went back and forth by the Hornets battled hard and with a consistent defensive effort were able to take a 5 point lead into the locker room at the end of the first half.

The scoring continued at a furious pace in the second half as Mussachia and Wilmington's junior Vinny Scifo went back and forth. In the end, the Hornets proved to be too much the Wildcats as Manchester Essex won the game 92-85. Mussachia racked up 31 points while grabbing 21 rebounds. Senior guard Alex Porter scored 15 points of his own while accumulating 9 rebounds in the game. Junior guards Sean Nally (22 points) went 5-7 from behind the three point arc and Chris Bishop added 9 points. For Wilmington, Skifo put on a show of his own as he ended the first half 6-of-7 from the field and ended the night with a game high 33 points.
