Westfield player gets jaw broken by punch

Westfield's Joe Mead Hopes to be back for tournament

On December 22 Westfield's Joe Mead, one of the top big men in WMass was punched in the jaw by a Commerce player. Mead suffered a broken jaw and will be lucky to return to his undefeated Westfield team before the WMass Tournament. The cell phone video released on You Tube last week shows players from both teams going after a loose ball with some shoving afterward. The video then shows what appears to be a sucker punch landing on and breaking Mead's jaw.

The player throwing the punched was disciplined under one of the MIAA rules and suspended two games for the incident. He has since returned to the Commerce line-up. This incident is of course unfortunate, as Mead will miss most of his junior season. Lessons need to learned, especially regarding violence in high school sports, and I think it is pretty obvious after watching the video below that someone missed the boat here. You judge for yourself.
